On Monday, October 21st, the family of Jayland Walker and the City of Akron, OH released a joint statement officially announcing the settlement of the Walker family’s wrongful death case. Attorney Bobby DiCello of DiCello Levitt LLP, representing the plaintiffs, retained 3D Forensic Inc to analyze video and ballistics evidence while working towards a final settlement amount of $4,850,000 for Mr. Walker’s estate.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to provide forensic clarification on such important cases, and hope our work ensures justice is delivered,” said 3DF’s CEO and lead expert Jason Fries.

This case stems from a fatal police interaction on June 22nd, 2022, in which several City of Akron police officers engaged in a vehicular pursuit with Mr. Walker after he fled from a traffic stop. After pulling over and fleeing on foot, eight officers continued chasing Mr. Walker for several seconds before they fired over 90 bullets, striking him over 40 times. While Mr. Walker had a firearm in his vehicle, he was unarmed during the foot pursuit when he was shot and killed.
Several officers recorded the chase and the critical moments leading to the shooting on their Axon body cameras. However, most of the footage failed to show the incident clearly because officers were running full speed with the cameras mounted on their bodies, and some had their arms raised in the field of view while drawing firearms. The raw footage could not enable a conclusive decision on whether the officers faced a threat before firing.
Seeing the lack of clarity in video evidence, attorney Bobby DiCello retained 3D Forensic to enhance this footage so an audience could discern Mr. Walker’s movements. The team analyzed several body camera videos and were able to identify which footage provided context on the moments shots were fired. 3DF then stabilized and focused this footage on where Mr. Walker could be seen, helping mitigate much of the camera’s shakiness and enabling a decision to be reached.

In their official statement, the City of Akron stated, "We all agree: Akron should be a place where everyone is safe. We all know there are important problems to address in our community and it is through our continued commitment, courage, and conversations we will move our city forward, together."
